SRM Institute of Science and Technology patents paving block containing waste printed circuit board
02 February 2023India: A team at SRM Institute of Science and Technology has patented a new concrete paving block produced using fibres from waste printed circuit board (WPCB). The refuse-derived material will replace some sand and clay in the concrete mix. SRM Institute of Science and Technology said that India generates 2Mt/yr of electronic waste (e-waste), and additionally imports this type of waste from other countries. Besides being non-biodegradable, WPCB is contaminated with colouring chemicals.
The developers said "The steadily rising volume of electronic waste poses a serious hazard to human health and the environment."
Construction of new precast concrete plant in Cercado Province
16 December 2022Bolivia: Construction of an upcoming 237,000m3/yr precast concrete plant in Uru Uru, Cercado Province, commenced on 13 December 2022. The plant will cost US$2.22m and have the capacity to produce 23,000 concrete paving blocks per day.
Southeast University develops coral-based concrete
12 December 2022China: A team at Southeast University has developed an alternative concrete that contains 8% cement. It uses coral reef limestone fragments and biodebris with an upper particle size of 53mm as fine aggregate. The researchers concluded that the material proved suitable for use in precast concrete paving slab production.
India: Three new Indian concrete companies have separately secured agreements for the use of Finland-based Betolar’s Geoprime alkali-activated slag and fly ash additive. Reuters News has reported that the companies are Balaiji Cement Products, Shiv Tiles and SNEH Precast. Engineering company Godrej & Boyce has also signed a letter of intent with the supplier for pilot production of concrete blocks, paving slabs and other elements.
Betolar expects producers to achieve global concrete production volumes of 250,000t/yr of concrete containing Geoprime by 2023.
